Salt Water versus Fresh Water Experiment

We used this experiment with My Father’s World Curriculum Unit 10 on Water.

You will need:

  • 2 clear cups or containers
  • Salt
  • Water
  • Liquid Food Coloring
  • Something to stir with

Add 1/2 cup of water to each cup.

In one of the cups, add 2 Tablespoons of salt and stir until dissolved.

Let the salt water rest for 30 seconds.

Then, drop 3 drops of food coloring into each glass.

See what happens!

The salt suspends the color!

We talked afterward about the salt water and how it’s easier to swim (and swim faster) in salt water because it has more buoyancy.
