Curious and Cozy

Seaworld’s Annual Rescue Run

The funny thing about this is that my family continued to think I was in one of the Disney runs because for “some reason” they just associate me with Disney. Ha ha, I guess that’s what you get moving to Florida. While I hope to run in a RunDisney event someday, there were a lot of reasons that we chose to do Seaworld instead.

Here’s why:

We really felt like we got a lot for our investment – both in our health and in the fact that we made neat memories with a dear friend AND did something to help the environment (albeit indirectly).

The day before our run, I picked up our packets at one of the hotels. They had a big map of the run available, as well as an info sheet and a sample of the medals.

The packet included our racing numbers and shirts, though you could pick that all up the morning of the race. I picked up the stuff for our whole family, which meant I got to pick the best number for myself.

It was so cold that morning! I mean, it wasn’t “big coat” cold (people who live in the North know what I mean), but it was definitely “jacket cold.” The event usually happens in January or February, which isn’t bitter cold in Florida, but it’s definitely crisp.

The race started and off we went, initially through the parking lot, then into Seaworld. There were water stations for drinks along the course so no one got dehydrated. This was our first race and it was a little strange since none of us are really “runners.” We instead picked people that we wanted to pass as our goal as we went along. Sometimes we passed then they passed us later. There were a LOT of walkers.

At the finish line was a big clock with our time and snacks of things like bananas, oranges, and pretzels and more bottled water. There were people handing out our finisher medals and water bottles.

Almost immediately after that, the kids races! It was divided into age groups.

All the kids under 4 ran together. Bug started strong but then got a little confused about what we wanted him to do and thus we derailed him. I guess it could get a little confusing with 3 adults giving directions while you’re trying to run.

The kids also received medals and a surprise, a cute little purple dolphin, which all of the kids seemed pretty stoked about.

A short time later, Seaworld invited everyone to the auditorium where the race winners were announced and we we were treated to an awesome show with the guest speaker Jack Hannah. He was also there later in the day for autographs.

It was a pretty awesome day. I’d definitely recommend it!

Here is the information from their website on the 2019 race:
